Water Project is Complete - Safi School Project has been working with Ngateu Secondary School to design a sustainable clean water source.
There was a time when water was gathered in buckets from a nearby ditch or stream for all school needs. The water was not clean. There was no community well. Students would go thirsty while at school. Water is not abundant in the community, especially during drought.
Initially we designed a water harvest project. While in the early execution of our plan, we were told that there is now a company drilling wells in the area successfully. (Initially we were told this was not an option.) Since a well is far superior to water harvesting for consistency, quantity and quality of water we switched gears. It is said that water, especially clean water, was a problem and greatly needed. They encouraged our work with hope in their eyes.
Through the efforts of Safi School Project, together with Rotary clubs in Lacey, WA, Arusha, Tanzania and with the help of Rotary International we were able to fund this project at an estimated cost of $30,000.
In February of 2011, at a depth of 110 meters, clean water was reached.
The benefits of clean water go beyond thirst, health and sanitation. Many hours were spent every day gathering water. This chore is done by everyone. The well will ease this burden. There will be more time for studying. The school intends to share this abundance with the community.
