Safi and SYEW join in outreach to students who hunger for educational opportunities. These students show great promise in their studies. In December 2020, SYEW held a parent meeting and talked with the students about the rules and regulations to keep their scholarships. They talked about accountability and shared Safi's love and the wonderful stories about their families.
Safi is walking hand in hand with Sponsoring Youth Empowering Women (SYEW pronounced see-you). SYEW is a Tanzanian in-country NGO made up of teachers, business professionals, parents, and former students (who were sponsored by Safi). They are eager to reciprocate. What we are seeing in these efforts is the best of what Tanzanian people can do, and it is awe inspiring! SYEW is reaching out and finding students who qualify well for secondary education but lack the funds to go to school. A Safi/SYEW pairing creates a strong, organically directed program that can empower these kids.
Elizabeth was a charitable, charismatic, knowledgeable human being who thought of others before herself. Her advocacy and support will be missed by so many projects and people in Tanzania. Elizabeth was a longtime supporter of Safi and Safi’s Purposeful Travel contact in Tanzania. She helped introduce many travelers to Tanzanian cultural projects, places, and friends. There were so many projects and lives that Elizabeth was involved with, advocating for, and supporting. The list goes on and on. She did say how much her friends meant to her, and that she “loved you all.” Elizabeth was a wonderful person, a delightful friend, and a loss to us all. Please think of Elizabeth adding your love, prayers, and tears to ours. Some of Elizabeth’s projects:

In memory of our dear friend in Tanzania, Elizabeth Hudgin, who died from COVID on Sunday, July 18th, 2021, Safi will be contributing to the support of many projects in which Elizabeth was involved.
Sadly we report that our dear friend in Tanzania, Elizabeth Hudgin, died from COVID on Sunday, July 18th, 2021.
Safi School Project members are still in shock after learning of Elizabeth's death, but we want to offer our sincere condolences to Elizabeth's family and many friends.
We just received the following information concerning Elizabeth.
Elizabeth's remains were cremated Saturday, 24th July at 1200 Arusha time with a limited number of friends in attendance. A short worship service was held at the Sikh crematorium at that time. Elizabeth was a longtime supporter of Safi, and she will be missed by so many people from all over the world.

May she rest in peace, and we all feel the love and peace of God.
On Joy and Sorrow Kahil Gibran
Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.
And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the self same well from which your laughter rises was often times filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Safi School Project’s purpose is to empower and improve the lives of young people in Tanzania through education. We collaboratively work hand-in-hand with a Tanzanian board, SYEW (Sponsoring Youth Empowering Women).
Safi/SYEW programs support students (50% to girls) to reach their potential. Safi/SYEW also understand that these students can’t learn on an empty stomach. The Feed Our Minds program addresses hunger issues.
More than ever, Safi counts on you and your support. We hope you will invite others in your life to join you in supporting Safi. This endeavor transforms lives of children and young adults. Your dollars go a long way. The return on your investment is absolutely immeasurable!

Post-Secondary Support
Safi School Project’s mission of empowering and improving the lives of young people in Tanzania through education is working! Initially we supported one secondary school (forms 1-4) where students struggled to complete those years. With Safi support, students began to pass. Success of Safi sponsored students has created a major funding challenge. All 2013 - 2016 graduating Form IV students passed their national examinations and most of these students were eligible to continue their education in Form V and VI or other vocational training that leads directly to a job.
We have seen that most Safi sponsored students are prepared to reach further. Safi members listened to these success stories and realized that the true goal of education is to prepare for sustainable employment. Support for post-secondary education is now part of the Safi School Project mission.
Post-Secondary options are based on test scores. Highest scores qualify for government school placement at a cost of approximately $700 per year excluding transportation. When those slots are filled, students can apply for private school with tuition costing approximately $1080 per year plus extra monies needed for mattresses, bedding, school supplies and transportation. Students can also opt to attend vocational training programs for careers in nursing, primary education, computer or other skilled fields.
Today, some of these original students have certificates and jobs. Some have continued to university and some have even graduated Law School. All of them thank Safi and their sponsors for believing and supporting them.
If you have any questions regarding this fund and its implementation, please write to Safi School Project, P. O. Box 8275, Lacey, WA 98505 or email [email protected]
Tanzania is a poor country financially but the people have a strong spirit and vision of hope for the future. The Tanzanian government supports education but can only cover some of the costs. The TZ Government does not fully fund secondary education and many secondary schools get no government support beyond the building supplies for the walls and roof of a school. The communities build the schools and it is through student school fees that they run the school and pay teachers.

“One Voice Speaks For So Many Others”
Excerpts from a letter sent in December 2018 by Tumaini F
I’m so excited to convey my sincere thoughts to you members of Safi school project and Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. I always fail to get words to thank you as you have been a great support to my education career life.
Frankly speaking if it could have not be you I couldn’t have attend school at all. I know it is very difficult for you to know how much you are helping us but we knows it is more than normality because. . .you are providing with us all the needs including school fees.
I would like to thank you once again for the help you have provided to me during my learning period and to my fellow students who get their education under support of Safi school project. . . .
It’s my pleasure to remind you that I’m still working at Green Acres School in Arusha as a teacher. . . .While working I’m also attending the evening classes at the Open University of Tanzania (OUT), pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Education Degree (BScED). It is now my second academic year of my degree studies, still in need of your prayer.
Thank you very much, intentionally wishing you Merry Christmas and prosperity in the New year 2018. Looking forward to see you again.
Yours sincerely Tumaini F

Our Mission and Goals
Safi School Project seeks to improve the lives of young people in Tanzania through education. We:
Safi's focus area is a place that we know, Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa. All activities are done in collaboration with local schools and communities. Safi seeks to grow the membership and support. As the support base grows Safi can continue accept applications from new students. Safi sees that education gives these young people choices for their future. With support these students succeed and give back to their communities.
The student's response to Safi support has been remarkable. These students know that education requires effort and they have applied effort. The doors to the future are opening and the students are ready to move forward. In Swahili, Safi means clean, good, pure. The students have told us that we have a Safi Heart. They say that they too want a Safi Heart.
- Support students
- Support committed teachers
- Provide financial aid
