To Safi School Project Membership

We are in good shape! - 2021 Safi Annual Report

In lieu of the Safi Annual Meeting, due to Covid-19 restrictions, this is Safi’s Annual Report to the membership for 2021.
The treasurers report, which is included in this letter, shows we successfully have raised enough monies to keep our sponsorship and other Safi programs solvent for 2021.
Some of the highlights of 2021 for Safi:
  • We held a very successful online auction in the fall of 2021, that brought in over $24,000 net.
  • We held a Safi Board retreat in October 2021. With the guidance of Doug Mah, a professional facilitator, we discussed and mapped out plans for Safi’s future.  We are in the process of putting those plans into our Long-Range Plan Objectives and Action Steps.
  • On December 1, an end of the year letter was sent to all Safi members. The income generated from that letter was encouraging for the continuation of Safi programs in 2022.
  • Our sponsors pledged financial support for Tanzanian students in 2021 and continue to support them in 2022.  However, there are additional students that need sponsors in 2022.
  • The Safi fundraising committee is planning another online auction to be held in the fall of 2022.
  • We continue to try and work closely with the Tanzanian SYEW Board (Supporting Youth Empowering Women) but, due to marginal WIFI, sporadic electricity, time zone issues, it has been difficult using web-based media like Zoom.
  • A huge part of Safi’s program success is the tool of using face to face collaboration with our counterparts in Tanzania.  Travel restrictions have chipped away at this important relationship.  Safi Executives have formed a task force of 4-5 members that will travel to Tanzania when safe to do so.  While there, they will conduct in person meetings with the SYEW board to help firm up our relations as we continue on the path that Safi has built.
  • Safi’s goal this year is to put into place the best outcome for Safi’s future.
We look forward to doing this with you and appreciate any feedback you have for the Board.

Sincerely,
 Marilyn Ahlf, Safi Chair.

Note – Safi reports funding on a Calendar Year. Many donations arrive in December to cover student fees that are paid in 2022.    Safi sponsored students attend school on a Tanzanian School Year Calendar which differs for each school level but almost always spans two calendar years (i.e.2021-2022).  Payment is due at various dates throughout the year.
Additionally, in 2021 the TZ government closed the schools due to Covid.  Students went home and school fees were not collected by the schools during that absence.  Schools resumed and Safi sponsored students' fees will be paid in 2022.

April 2021 Newsletter

The pandemic is a challenge but Safi and the Safi Students will not quit.

Safi is currently supporting 8 secondary, 49 post secondary and 19 university students.

Today, Safi is walking hand in hand with SYEW (pronounced see-you). SYEW (Sponsoring Youth Empowering Women) is an in-country NGO made up of teachers, business professionals, parents, and former students (who were sponsored by Safi).
